COngratulations on two years Ian. And I guess I should say "Thanks" too for sharing the piece from the Observer, but it only confirms the similar one I quoted myself from the NYTimes on my own 2-year anniversary post: that ads are coming and that Substack is shifting to becoming another Unsocial Media app. Plus, as you note, the vast amounr of income is going to a very small number of people, and we "creators" are all seeing more new followers now than new subscribers. That said, we are stuck here until something better comes along - and among Substack's many values is that people like you and I get to know each other along the way. Cheers!
Yes. Possibly we all get a little too critical of any changes to Substack because it feels precious. Overall it’s still a great platform, not least because of the friendships that can be made. It’s great how supportive we are of each other here.
PS I’ve renewed your comp. subscription. If it’s okay I’ll end my payment to you so we can mutually comp. You’ll be in the credits/acknowledgments of my ‘Lifehouse’ book that is slowly nearing completion.
Thank you Ian, for this update. I appreciate your writings. To me writing (and reading) about music is not about "how can you be a critic when you are not a star musician," but rather, "we all love music, let's talk about specific artists and releases."
