Wasn't wowed by the Steven Wilson, just on its face, however it was recorded! As for AI (and/or ChatGPT for lyrics), I hope artists and/or labels who feel they must produce records this way, at least label their product appropriately, and you're right to be skeptical if they will!

Maybe it should be treated like the Warning labels slapped on product (U.S., anyway) by PMRC and Congress back in the day, when rap felt the need to rear its filthy head! Nothing in an editing or censorship way, just label stuff so we know what we're getting...actual humans or computers! Elroy Jetson or Rosie?😁

I have to confess here Brad, but I have plagiarised every article I have ever written. Plucked all my words right from a popular book by that Webster fellow. Please keep it our secret...

Webster? Aw, I enjoy his wordy little pamphlets. Me? I use the OED, The Director's Cut, with 84 volumes. If you have the skills the AI influence is generally redundant, unless as a tool to stimulate creation. Playlists and all that I can’t be bothered with I also like to hear albums as they were conceived to be heard. Purchasing something is the way to go whatever form that takes, streaming guides me towards new music

Well said. It’s great that streaming makes it easy to listen to recommendations, of course, and it’s also important to buy an album that connects. I wish I could buy more. I’ll get there 😊

Same, Bandcamp has been my real go to in terms of finding great music. I wish I also could purchase much more

AI created music, photos and the written word.

It’s the end of creativity! A new generation of freeloaders think they can make money using it. The first few will but as more people churn out this stuff it will be valueless.

Yes, there are real dangers, although there will always be people who are driven to create using their own talent, imagination and craft. It will be increasingly easy for people to freeload and it will be terrible if/when they are the ones making money.

Longer-term: yes, value will decrease but, as we're only at the beginnings of this, new and even more alarming possibilities will open up. And then - please! - we might get a 'back to music' campaign, as we've had 'back to mono', and records ('vinyls') have become trendy again.

Proper creatives will need to get better at describing their process. McCartney triggered many alarms when he said 'Now and Then' used an AI Lennon, when in reality new software enabled a previously unusable demo to be cleaned up to separate the vocal from the piano.

We are living in ... um ... interesting times.

I think I’ll always be an album guy at heart, it’s just how I’ve always consumed music, as a coherent and intentionally sequenced piece of art.

I’m similar to you in wanting to write about how music makes new feel. I may not know all the musical terminology but I think I do an adequate job of conveying why I like an album, or a song, or a part of a a song (as I did when discussing Metric’s Doomscroller in my most recent entry).

Thanks for all you do, I’ve discovered a lot of new and old (but new to me) music.

I’ve become a little lax in my Bandcamp purchasing this year, something I want to rectify in 2024. Thanks for the important reminder.

Wishing you all the best for 2024!

My mantra has become "so much music, so little time"! It's always tricky to balance listening to classic albums against all the great new music constantly being released, especially as ideally it's good to listen to an album multiple times to get the full picture.

Thank you for your writing too!
