Gems #28: the album-length playlist with music from artists including Jane Weaver, Paul Weller, and Rufus Wainwright
New and classic tracks, compiled by Ian Sharp of LP.
Welcome to Gems, my weekly playlist of classic tracks and new releases. In keeping with the ethos of LP, each playlist is 40–45 minutes long, sequenced as ‘Side 1’ and ‘Side 2’. Editing is a discipline.
Side 1: Jane Weaver, Paul Weller, Fabiana Palladino, London Grammar, Phosphorescent, and Montanus.
Side 2: The Black Crowes, Vargus Blues Band + Gaz Coombes, Rufus Wainwright, Rubi Ate the Fig, and Riffindots
New music by Jane Weaver, Phosphorescent, Fabina Palladino (Pino’s daughter, although I’m sure she wants to be recognised in her own right), The Black Crowes, the debut single by Montanus, Paul Weller, London Grammar, and Travis. Gaz Coombes joins the Vargus Blues Band on an intriguing new album, and Rubi Ate the Frog continues the Eastern influences of George Harrison (read last week’s Glimpse).
We also have the latest track in
/ Riffendots 2024 release project and a new Rufus Wainwright cover of Lou Reed’s Perfect Day from the forthcoming tribute album to be released for Record Store Day (Keith Richards’ version of I’m Waiting for the Man was included a couple of weeks ago in Gems #25).A couple of days ago I reviewed the new single by Hats Off Gentlemen It’s Adequate, and that will be included in Gems as soon as it hits the streaming services.
If you make music as well as read and write about it, I’d love to consider one of your tracks for inclusion here. Your links are welcome.

Robert Reed - Sanctuary Live 2024 (promo)
Robert Reed is an extraordinary musician. Yes, this sounds like unreleased Mike Oldfield material. Effectively this is a tribute act who write their material. You may have thoughts about that, but when the music is this good, regularly producing spinal shivers, who cares? Pre-order via Bandcamp.
I may have missed something you've said before, but how do you go about compiling these?
Working my way through my Substack backlog and just catching up on this one. Some great tracks in here! I didn’t realize London Grammar has a new album coming out, very excited for that! I’m really enjoying the new Jane Weaver album.
